If on a day off you did not rush to your work laptop, you are a lucky person.
In Europe (the Netherlands), the shortest working week is only 27 hours, while in Ukraine it is all 40, not including overtime, calls and correspondence on weekends or during vacations.

Unjustified overloading of employees will not help your company to achieve success, but will only lead to complete burnout and constant change of personnel.

Stop using the word “as soon as possible”. If you add this label to every request, you are admitting that each of them has a high priority, and therefore none has priorities. The word “as soon as possible” causes inflation. It devalues any request. If this or that task is not done immediately – no one will die

Why work-life balance is so important?

The career needs of your employees are not the only thing they live for. There is also a personal life that takes time and effort. Imbalance, in any case, will not lead to success in any of the spheres, so psychologists advise to maintain balance in everything.

What can cause the imbalance?

  • Systematic overload at work (uneven distribution of tasks among employees, simultaneous work on two positions, constant deadlines).
  • Rigid schedule (frequent business trips, night shifts, additional working hours).
  • Family and domestic problems.

Small spoiler – it is impossible to find a perfect balance, just accept it as a fact, but there are some factors that will help you live in harmony with your work and personal life.

The ability to abstract. On the way to work, instead of communicating in work chats, listen to an audiobook, but at the presentation of a new project, refrain from correspondence in style: “What’s for dinner tonight?”.

Set work boundaries. In Portugal, managers are legally prohibited from disturbing employees during non-working hours, this is spelled out in the labor code. You are not obliged to work from home or discuss a new business strategy on Saturday night, it’s your time, use it for the benefit of yourself and your family.

Health is always a priority. This phrase can be hung instead of a picture, or written on a sticker and glued at the workplace. Overwork, constant stress or depression will affect both productivity and the atmosphere at home. It is better to talk to a psychologist for an hour than to sort out piles of documents that will definitely wait until tomorrow.

Love what you do. If you hate your job or team and the thought that in the morning everything will be repeated again makes you feel bad – run away, do not be afraid to quit and start a new life. At 40 people become models, at 50 – start dancing, and at 60 – work in the office for the first time. It’s never too late to find your favorite thing.
Time for yourself. Work is only a part of life. Even if you are a director and 300 people are subordinated to you, do not forget about your hobby, vacation or pet. Live life to the fullest, don’t let work consume you.


And finally, a piece of advice from the book “Just Space”: “We can pull the load of change, but in the long run the task will be impossible. It’s like weight training in the gym. If you can strain and do one set with a super heavy barbell, it does not mean that you are able to carry it 24/7.”
